Build It and They Will Come

Some call it social networking. Some call it brand building. I call it internet identification creation.

All businesses want to generate a buzz, one-up the competition and be the captain. Why not chart your own course?! One of the many great things about social media is the fact that it is always changing to suit the needs of everyone engaged. Here’s the thing. It’s not ‘out with the old and in with new’ any longer. We’re embracing the old and watching it work with the new. The key is to understand how this relationship works. Then, ‘plan your work and work your plan.’ I remember my dad saying that to me during a real estate branch meeting.  Understanding the social media channels and their specifics is vital. Otherwise, you certainly won’t be helpful to anyone, especially yourself.  Spend a lot of time on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and of course a blogging service (I favor Blogger, personally). I believe blogs and online discussion forums (chat/product review posts) are as important, if not more important, than Twitter. A Forrester Research article about the various channels customers favor when seeking to communicate and connect with their top brands, shows parallel viewpoints.

In order to make your social media plan work for you and/or your business, you must be silent and listen intently and study the responses. Understanding needs, wants, expectations, speech, personalities and behavior are crucial. Knowing how to spark conversations and generate stimulating responses (time is of the essence especially) will engage your audience and create a following.  Consistency is very important. Old news is NO news!

As you utilize video resources (YouTube, video blogs like 12seconds, video chat services like Skype), radio (podcasts, etc.) or if you want to share resources for business or personal reasons (LinkedIn, AgreeADate, etc.), just make sure you record your creations (Retaggr or Zooity) and  try to link all of them.

Finally, move away from your computer or handheld device and hit the pavement for some good old-fashioned networking. Join clubs, help your community and share what you’ve learned. Form relationships by having face to face conversations with others and create a buzz.  Word of mouth marketing is one of the biggest lead generators and it will remain that way.

So, whatever you call it: social networking, brand building or internet identification creation…..just make sure you identify yourself and your business and let EVERYONE know your number.

35+ Examples of Corporate Social Media in Action

Article published at http://mashable.com
July 23, 2008 - 11:38 am PDT - by Aaron Uhrmacher

We’ve discussed
some tactics to get your company better engaged with social media. Lest you think there’s a limit to how you can connect with business and customer facing audiences, we’ve assembled this list of more than 35 companies who are experimenting with social media in a host of different ways.

This list is by no means exhaustive, and it represents a wide variety of businesses, industries and social media tools. As you can see, engagement takes many forms. Some are likely to generate more discussions with the company while others might result better connections between customers. Some will fade away over the next 6-12 months while others will continue to grow and evolve.

Custom Landing Pages for Your Social Media Presence

February 2, 2009 by WebSuccessDiva

Internet marketers have been using custom landing pages (like with search engine marketing) for years. The concept is simple, you target your audience, you should customize the pages they land on for better conversions (optins, sales, etc). There really is no difference when planning your social media presence as well. While all social media sites you are present at, do not warrant a custom landing page — many do — for tracking and increasing your ability to know what’s really working in your social media marketing.

Custom landing pages for social media, seem to have hit mainstream, when Problogger highlighted the custom landing page technique he learned from @Pistachio for Twitter. I say, these pages need to go much farther and can actually be a critical point in your decision making as to whether certain social media sites are actually bringing the benefits you spend so much time to achieve. Especially in the case of the busy solopreneur and bloggers.

But, should you just throw up a landing page on your blog and leave it at that? What should go on that landing page? Is it different for every site or by audience? Should you make free offers, paid offers, or just introduce yourself?

Growing use of social media technologies in businesses

Posted by peopleperhour.com - 15/09/2008 17:18

A recent survey of over 500 executives carried out by global IT consultancy Avanade has found that social media technologies can have tremendous impact on client relationships in businesses. Around 60% of those interviewed agreed that social networking are becoming intrinsic to a firm's communication strategy.

The advantages to an organisation of adopting such communication strategies lie in the growth of trust and collaboration among the workforce. This trend is already evident among
freelancers for whom communication and networking are essential tools for building business relationships.

How to: Build a Social Media Cheat Sheet for Any Topic

Written by
Marshall Kirkpatrick / January 10, 2009 3:25 AM

Let's say you're a butcher, a baker or a candlestick maker. You want to get up to speed on the social media activity in your market, as fast as you can. Or perhaps you want to sell things to candlestick makers online, or you're a journalist writing a story about blogging butchers, or maybe you've got some kind of weird baking fetish or academic interest.

Is there any way to ramp up your knowledge of these fields, fast, other than the "Google and wander" method? We think there is. Below you'll find step-by-step instructions, with screen shots, for the process we use when we want to get smart about a new field in a hurry.

Works With Just About Anything
We'll use the field of Education as our example, because there is a lot of activity there and we presume we've got more educators as readers here than butchers or candlestick makers. These methods can be applied to discovering the hottest people and topics in social media in any field, though.

If you doubt that these kinds of steps could help in your line of work - check out
this post, where we found the best work-related RSS feeds for Fire Inspectors and Physical Therapists, just to prove that we could.

In the following 13 steps, we'll walk you through how we identify top blogs on any topic, how we quickly figure out what their most popular recent posts have been about, how we incorporate their blog archives into our knowledge about the field and how we find where else they are participating in conversation around the web. Going through the whole process takes us less time than it took us to write this post.

No end of variations are possible, of course, on this method - but we expect a lot of readers will find this useful. People new to social media are often frustrated when they are told to "join the conversation" - because they aren't sure where to find the conversation. Here's how we find and track the most popular conversations in niche fields. Popularity isn't a perfect judge of quality by any means, but it's a good place to start from.

Is this post a cheat sheet? Maybe, but we think of it as a way for you to make your cheat sheet on whatever sector you follow.
