Retweeting is an integral part of the Twitter experience. The retweet (or “RT”) allows Twitter users to share the best links, tweets, and gems they find from others using the service. But for beginners, it’s not immediately obvious what retweets are, or what tools to use to make retweeting easier. Read on...

Competition is good. And generally speaking, it drives innovation – just look at the innovate and imitate process we’ve seen unfold at FacebookFacebook reviews, Twitter, and FriendFeedFriendFeed reviews over the past few months as the social sites duplicate each other’s popular features.

One area where we’re currently seeing a ton of competition is in Twitter search. Just in the past few weeks, we’ve seen the launch of Tweefind and OneRiot, not to mention other existing tools likeSocialMention that incorporate Twitter search as part of broader social media monitoring.

Today, yet another tool launched – Twazzup – that adds a slightly new twist on Twitter search, most notably real-time analysis (similar to the new FriendFeed) and a beautiful interface. However, the big challenge facing all of these products is that Twitter already offers an excellent search product. So why bother? Read what Adam has to say and more.....

HOW TO: Create Groups for Twitter

February 15th, 2009 | by Doriano "Paisano" Carta

MASHABLE

One of the most demanded features for Twitter has been the ability to create groups, allowing members to focus on different sets of people they’re following. For example, you could create groups for all of your fantasy league friends, colleagues at work, friends in real life, family members, and so on.

Because Twitter still does not provide any group feature, it has opened the floodgates for countless third party solutions. There are many different ways Twitter members can create virtual groups. Here is a roundup of some of the most popular methods employed today. Read more here....

Find ‘Em On Twitter: 15 Twitter Directories Compared

January 30th, 2009 | by Jennifer Van Grove

MASHABLE

Searching for people or applications on TwitterTwitter reviews? Good luck with that. Since Twitter offers little in the way of people search features (though they now have a suggestion tool), your search for interesting and dynamic people to follow and applications to use could be a giant time suck.

Thankfully there are more than a few third-party resources that you can turn to for finding new people to follow, and new tools to help you do what Twitter won’t let you. We’ll shed a little light on these 15 directories by separating them into four categories: applications, people, politics, and strictly business. Read more...

Social Networks Get Report Cards..

The Fastest Growing Social Sites

April 20th, 2009 | by Adam Ostrow
MASHABLE

Each month (and often more frequently than that) we take a look at trends in social networking, by the numbers. Recently, we’ve focused on Twitter’s astronomical growth - now up better than 2,500 percent in one year - and Facebook’s climb to become top social network over MySpace.

However, this month there are a few other trends within the numbers – provided by Nielsen Online – that highlight some other storylines within the social media space, as well as continue to put meat behind the trends we’ve been covering over the past few months.

Social Networks: Facebook Takes Over Top Spot, Twitter Climbs

Written by Andy Kazeniac (contact - e-mail) -- February 9th, 2009 | Share - Save - E-mail

With Facebook officially turning five years old recently, combined with the site surging past MySpace in Monthly Unique Visitors, it seems like a good time to take a little deeper look at the social networking giants.

It’s hard to believe that last year around this time we discussing the effects of bad PR for Facebook and if the site had ‘jumped the shark,’ but those arguments now seem to more appropriately apply to other properties.

A year ago, we ranked the top 25 social networking sites by monthly visits, and I was curious to see how the positions would change if we re-ranked those same sites with the most recent figures. Read more and get stats...

Yahoo!MSN and AOL are the top ranking portals on the web – but how do their homepages stack up? With several hundred thousand dollars a day paid for some homepage ads, a lot of money is at stake. Compete ran the numbers on visitors to top publisher homepages and compared them to visitors to any page on the publisher’s domain. What we found may surprise you.

At the top of the list are some familiar faces. Google and Yahoo! have the most domain and homepage visitors on the web. But did you know that 22 million more people visited Google’s homepage than Yahoo!’s in March? Kind of surprising considering that Yahoo!’s homepage is a bonanza of fresh, interactive content and ads, whereas Google’s homepage is basically just a blank white screen, logo and search box. 7 Secrets to Getting Your Next Job Using Social Media
January 5th, 2009 by Dan Schawbel

Dan Schawbel is the author of Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success, and owner of the award winning Personal Branding Blog.

Between current economic conditions and the technological evolution of the Internet, the traditional approach most job seekers have taken in the past is no longer viable.

The approach — developing a resume and cover letter, locating jobs on and submitting your resume to corporate sites and job banks, and crossing your fingers in hopes of receiving a call from a hiring manager — is, for the most part, a thing of the past. The new approach is far different. It boils down to the fact that there are fewer jobs available, more competition for those jobs and more touch points for recruiters and seekers to interact. ForSaleByTxt: Get Instant Information on For Sale Signs via SMS

Article published by Mashable and written by Jennifer Van Grove: http://mashable.com/2009/03/10/forsalebytxt/

* This post is part of Mashable’s Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.

Quick Pitch: ForSaleByTxt.com allows buyers to get the information they want, when they want it.

Genius Idea: How often do you see for For Sale signs while you’re driving in your neighborhood? Most of them have a contact number that you can call for more information, but if you’re looking for more immediate information to consume at your convenience, ForSaleByTxt just makes sense. Sellers can use the tool for their big-ticket items — think boats, cars, houses — to let potential buyers use SMS to receive more info.

It’s not the prettiest site, but ForSaleByTxt does offer a service that plenty of buyers want and sellers should want to support — information made available via SMS message — and it’s pretty painless to use. Read more here
